Planetarium matinee features “Sesame Street” and space travel

The weekday matinee at the Mayborn Planetarium and Space Theater features Sesame Street characters and the world of astronauts in two full-dome shows airing July 19-22. “One World, One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure is at 2 p.m. and “Astronaut” is at 3 p.m. Tickets for either matinee show are $4 per person.

Geared to a younger audience, “One World, One Sky” aims to nurture a child's natural sense of wonder about the night sky. The full-dome show follows “Sesame Street's” Big Bird and Elmo as they explore the night sky with Hu Hu Zhu, a Muppet from Zhima Jie, the Chinese counterpart to “Sesame Street.” Together, they take an imaginary trip from Sesame Street to the moon where they discover how different it is from Earth. When Elmo and Hu Hu Zhu "travel" to the moon, they discover some basic but surprising scientific facts. “One World, One Sky” is a brilliant spectacle of light and color as the furry friends watch the stars twinkle over “Sesame Street.” Children attending the show can interact as the characters draw constellations and count the time it takes the sun to set. Show time is at 2 p.m.

Added to the show lineup in May, “Astronaut” takes the audience inside the making of an astronaut and how to become a part of the incredible journey of space travel. Viewers will experience a rocket launch from inside the body of an astronaut, explore the amazing worlds of both inner and outer space, float around the International Space Station and maneuver through microscopic regions of the human body. Then discover the perils that lurk in space as “Chad,” the show’s prototype astronaut, is subjected to a series of tests. “Astronaut” is presented in stunning high-definition, 360-degree full-dome video and explosive surround sound for an experience like nothing on Earth. Show time is at 3 p.m.
